Malvick screwed up his nerve and ducked back inside the barn looking for clues that might identify the victims.

All three corpses had bared chests - all the better to show off the seven pointed star carved into them - but in the ragged remains of one of their discarded shirts Malvick found a bloodstained note:

Messrs. Mortwell, Hask, and Tabe-
A deal has come about that I need capitol in.  It involves property and gold, and though I am not at liberty to tell you the exact details, it will make us all rich.  Come to Bradley's Barn on Cougar Creek tomorrow night.  We can meet there to discuss our futures.
                                                                       Your Lordship.

Now reasonably sure that these were the three men he was sent to find, Malvick began searching for their ill gotten loot.  Of course, there was no gold to be found.  And gods! that stench was overpowering!  Malvick had been around corpses before, and while the barn had been turned into a charnel house, he figured he should be adjusting to the odour by now.  But no, the stench still threatened to make him vomit.

A bad thought occurred to him then:  The men he was sent to scare had now turned up dead, and the money he was to recover was missing.  And the only one who could colaberate his story was his dog.   Heading back to Magnimar to confront his employer may not be the wisest course of action.  Yes, Sandpoint and Sheriff Hemlock ( a man who could vouch for his character if it came to that) was looking like a better alternative by the minute.

He left the barn and went back to his captive.  He had broken off the shafts of the arrows and bound the wounds as well as he could.  The man was still delerious, obviously fevered.  In addition to the arrow wounds, he had many thin superficial cuts along his arms and chest.  Suprisingly, he was able to stand, and with some coaxing, walk, with Malvick using the rope as a sort of makeshift tether or leash.  He kept the man bound. Malvick was confident this was the fourth victim but he wasn't taking any chances.

Malvick knew it was time to settle for the night. He was tired and a look at Ariva told him her loyalty was stronger than her fatigue. "Good girl, we have to get this fellow to Sandpoint before he nods off for good. Unfortunately you don't count in a jury of peers," the smirk as he said it went right across his face. What peers in this foul world? He knew he wouldn't let it come to that but it was still a thought in the back of his mind.

It was a slow journey. Ariva and Malvick kept a keen eye out for anything along the way. Hopefully with some luck they wouldn't be way layed and Hemlock would have time to hear quite a story.
